It took nearly a decade for Neal to put enough of the pieces together to figure out why they chose him. Neal was a drifter, a war veteran with no permanent address, and no family to speak of. They took him up as he was hitchhiking across Arizona on his way East from California. It was the late 70’s, as far as Neil can recall. In the end Neal realized, they simply chose him because he was what they were looking for.
He was held captive for days and slowly weakened. Then at the rise of the new moon, when there was barely any light in the sky, they set him loose into the woods. Then she began her pursuit. The chase lasted almost 3 hours, and then she was upon him.
Eliza sired him that night, and over the next week, taught him what he needed to know to survive. But she also warned him: soon he would take her place in their master’s plan. She would be dust and it would be for Neal to prove that he could survive and become the tool their master sought.
The night of the ritual was a blur. The memories linger at the edge of Neal’s awareness, when he focuses too hard on them they retreat into shadow. He remembers eyes, deep glowing eyes. He remembers savagery. He remembers the sweet taste of his sire’s blood, of her soul. He remembers the burning kiss of the sun as he clawed into the cold earth that became his haven for that day. His sire lived within him now, and his master and the pack were gone. But Neal still remembers the master’s eyes, and the touch of the master’s voice upon his soul.
The year that followed was a trial. He found himself branded as a diablerist, a murderer of his own kind. But unable to explain how or why to anyone’s satisfaction he was forced to dwell on the fringe of kindred society. It wasn’t until 1984 when Neal met a young and visionary Ventrue named David Koresh in Alabama. Koresh had need of a few loyal men and Neal who was looking for an existence more substantial than night to night accepted the offer.
It was Koresh who gave Neil much of his (albeit skewed) understanding of Kindred lore and politics. Koresh was going to return to his sire’s cult in Texas, take it as his own, and create a new Carthage right under the noses of the Camarilla. Years of maneuvering and Koresh finally destroyed his sire and took over the cult in 1991. But his success was short lived, as his sire’s allies rallied both supernatural and mortal forces and burned Koresh and his followers alive mid day.
Neal badly burned, again dug himself into the earth and spent the next 10 years in a state of torpor. Upon arising he discovered his blood and aura had been purged of the taint of diablerie. Heading North, he made his way into Cleveland after a couple of years and after some time found a new coterie of kindred looking to carve a small place out for themselves in their city. He finds that Andy Andy reminds him a bit of David, and looks out for him more than the others as a result.
He knows though that some night the master of the hunt will return to take his measure.
Sabbat War Update
Neal’s predatory instincts evolved to a new level during the Sabbat war. Honing his connection to both his own beast and the urban animals of Cleveland and it’s environs, Neal became one of the lead trackers/ hunters of the war. Adept at finding Sabbat warrens, Neal often lead small groups of kindred on targeted assaults. It was early in the war when he began to regularly hunt with two ghouled huskies – hulking savages that were fiercely loyal and unnaturally attuned to Neal’s impulses.
The war took a heavy toll on Neal, his eyes, quite literally bear the mark of his savagery and the gallons of blood he shed in the name of the Camarilla and Prince. If the departure of Andy Andy was difficult for Neal, he doesn’t show it. Choosing instead to immerse himself in his new duties as Scourge for Prince Vivian Schreck. His quiet, haunted presence is an uncomfortable reminder to all of the costs paid in the war against the Sabbat.
