Henry Thurston was a kid who always dreamed of the stage and the tricks of magicians. He would sneak into vaudeville shows and try to duplicate disappearing cards and magic hankerchiefs for his friends. By the time he was fifteen it was all he wanted to do. His first job was as a magician’s plant, being called from the audience to secure a pair of trick cuffs on Lord Mandrake, his employer. Learning how the tricks worked didn’t ruin the magic of a well-performed act and the spell the audience found themselves under. He struggled for years to get a headlining gig, and took the name Enrico the Magnificent at the age of twenty. He became a regular in the small theatre circuit on Coney Island. Two years later, the night of his big debut at the Palace Theater in Manhattan he walked off the stage from a round of riotous applause to find an adoring fan waiting in his dressing room. Miss Elanor Karlstein introduced herself as an avid fan of magicians and interested in showing him some tricks to improve his sleight-of-hand. She made a strong case for the advantages of eternal life and the powers of the Damned, and that night he was embraced.
For several months he enjoyed the spotlight of becoming one of the premier vaudeville performers in all of New York. His shows were always sold out, he moved into a posh townhouse, and enjoyed the high life of socialite parties. Unfortunately his sire was not among his fans. Elanor became obsessively jealous of his fame and notoriety among the very circles in which she once considered herself a commodity. She dreamed of becoming famed for discovering the young stage prodigy but instead found her influence on the young man widely dismissed. In an echo of his discovery, she met with Henry in his dressing room after a show and staked the young vampire, then closing and locking him in a stage trunk.
Henry awoke over a hundred years later in an abandoned warehouse in Cleveland. His saviors were a small group of teenagers upon whom he frenzied and killed all three, hiding their bodies in the very same derelict trunk he had spent his long slumber in. The warehouse became his home and over several weeks he learned what he could about this modern age from the shadows of alleyways and rooftops of Cleveland’s slums. He found himself drawn to the thumping beats of The Warehouse one night and has begun to spend his nights among the crowd, just one more freak in the dancing mass.
